U8
The u8 program has been designed to expose kids to the sport while they have fun, get a little exercise, and see their friends. Heres what to expext:
  • u6, u7, and u8 children are organized into teams seperately;
  • each team meets on saturday mornings and has a 30 minute practice, followed by a 30 minute scrimmage against another team from their age grouping;
  • Games are 4v4 and non-competitive. this means no goalies and no score keeping (okay, the kids keep score, but the adults don't and we discourage it ;^)
  • They are young... they fall down, they cry, they always want to show you what they can do, and they talk more than they run;
  • If they need to miss an occasional practice, that's okay. please let the coach know in advance if you can.
  • They should not sign up if they don't intend to come most weeks. this is not fair to the other players on the team.
U10
In both the fall and the spring, the U10 program runs practices during the week and games on Saturdays. It has been designed to develop skills and team play.
A few years ago, the U10 program competed against teams across Essex County. This meant Saturday games were played in places like Salem and Marblehead. That's a long way to travel for a 9 year old.
To solve the problem, MSC got together with Newburyport to form an inter-town league. We use the same FIFA licensed officials that Essex County does, the same rules, there's a good range of competition for the skill level, and we travel a lot less.
Here's what to expect:
  • U10 teams normally meet 1 or 2 times a week to practice;
  • Games are on Saturdays in one of the member towns;
  • We use the FIFA Laws of Soccer as a framework, but we've modified them some to accommodate for their age. For example, we play 7v7 rather than 11v11 to give each kid more time with the ball and simplify the team strategy;
  • They are still young... They fall down, sometimes they cry, they still want to show you what they can do;
  • At this age, the player is learning to become a piece of a mechanized team. This means that making practices and games becomes more important. They should expect to make almost every one. Please contact the coach in advance if they will not.
